Coimbatore: The Coimbatore corporation is planning to file a police complaint against Prani Mithran, an NGO, and its personnel after a video of mishandling of a stray dog by them went viral online triggering a widespread outrage.The NGO has got the contract for run the corporation’s animal birth control (ABC) centre in Vellalore. During a dog-catching operation in Sai Garden in ward 87, the NGO team members mishandled a stray dog. The video of the incident shows a man aggressively handling a dog, pulling its limb and throwing it into a net. Another team member was seen instructing others to throw stones at the dogs and assault them.This incident has raised concerns among animal lovers and activists about the qualifications and training of the personnel involved in the dog-catching task.
An anonymous animal rescuer expressed fears about the treatment of animals in the ABC centre, questioning the credibility of the sterilization process if such untrained individuals are involved.Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said besides filing a police complaint, the corporation would insist on providing proper training to all personnel involved in the dog-catching, focusing on the correct use of equipment and humane handling of stray dogs in order to prevent occurrence of such incidents in the future.
