A day after the alleged rape of a female patient by an operation theatre assistant at a private hospital in Karimnagar, the Karimnagar three-town police on Monday stepped up investigation into the case and intensified efforts to nab the accused.
The horrific incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, sparking outrage and demands for stern action against the accused.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the Karimnagar three-town police have registered a case against the operation theatre assistant of the private hospital, identified as Dakshina Murthy, under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and admitted the victim to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical examination.
The victim, aged around 22 years, was admitted to the private hospital in Karimnagar on Saturday (September 6) with high fever.
Sources said that the accused allegedly administered a sedative injection on the female patient in an almost empty ward behind the curtains before sexually assaulting her in the small hours of Sunday.
After regaining consciousness, the female patient narrated her ordeal to her mother, who slept outside the ward in the hospital corridor.
The health department officials on Monday served a notice on the private hospital, where the rape incident was reported, sources added.
A case under Section 64 of the BNS has been registered based on the complaint filed by the female patient’s father on Sunday, said Karimnagar three-town circle inspector G. John Reddy, adding that further investigation is under way.
